Due to the impact of COVID-19, this subject is being undertaken by the Doctor of Medicine Year 3 2020 and Year 3 2021 cohorts, in lieu of MEDS90021 MD Research Project 1.
This subject is an introduction to the principles and methods underlying evidence based medicine, research study design, literature searching and ethics in clinical research.
Intended learning outcomes
At the completion of this subject, students will be able to:
Introduction to Research
- Discuss the role and importance of appropriately conducted research and investigation in the care of patients (basic science, clinical, medical education)
- Describe the principles and methods underlying Evidence‐Based Medicine (EBM)
- Explain how current medical knowledge is scientifically justified and how that knowledge evolves
Introduction to Study design
- Compare and contrast qualitative and quantitative (cohort, case-control, RCT and pilot studies) research methodologies at an introductory level
- Describe the hierarchy of scientific evidence and how to use this hierarchy to rank the quality of scientific evidence
- Describe methods of data collection and their limitation
- Compare and contrast different approaches to reporting, and summarising, scientific evidence (systematic review and meta-analysis)
How to Ask a Research Question
- Describe the principles for constructing an answerable research question
- Outline approaches to identifying knowledge gaps/areas of uncertainty in scientific evidence
- Demonstrate how to convert clinical questions into structured, answerable clinical questions using the PICO criteria
Literature searching
- Compare and contrast different sources of scientific information
- Construct an appropriate search criterion to effectively search sources of information to address specific clinical questions
- Demonstrate how to document the findings of a search strategy using electronic reference managers
Ethics in Clinical Research
- Demonstrate knowledge of the accepted quality standards for the design, conduct, recording and reporting of clinical trials that involve human participants
- Compare and contrast fundamental ethical research practices (eg disclosures, conflict of interest)
- Describe the ethical principles of clinical and translational research in patient care and apply these to relevant situations
- Describe the purpose of data and safety monitoring plans
