This subject introduces students to German Lieder from the classical vocal tradition, focussing on musical and textual analysis, performance practice and interpretation.
Students analyse German song texts and scores in their historical, musical and literary contexts. A strong practical component enables students to apply analytical skills to performance, and to develop stylistically authentic and effective interpretations.
Coaching and peer interactions establish a positive and collaborative ensemble environment.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- analyse German song texts and scores in their historical, musical and literary contexts;
- analyse the relationship between text and music in German lied;
- prepare and perform German lieder, demonstrating musical style, authentic pronunciation, and effective interpretation;
- work constructively and collaboratively with tutor and peers to improve performance.
