Students who play orchestral instruments are expected to participate in MCM ensembles and you should talk to the head of your instrument area to determine which MCM ensemble you will participate in. You may also be required to participate in other activities in your instrument area, check with your head of instrument.
Instrumental/Vocal students:
Participation in ensembles and performances as approved by the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and designed in consultation with subject co-ordinator/s.
Conducting students:
Participation in ensembles and performances, as a conductor, as approved by the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music and designed in consultation with the subject co-ordinator.
Intended learning outcomes
Instrumental/Vocal students:
On completion of this subject students should:
- Have developed the ability to perform sympathetically with other members of the group;
- Have an understanding of the range of repertory available for the ensemble group of which the student is a member.
- Be aware of the importance of individual preparation;
- Become sensitive to the requirements of working in groups, large and small, particularly with regard to regular and punctual attendance;
Conducting students:
On completion of this subject, students should have developed:
- The ability to conduct sympathetically and lead an ensemble;
- Skills in the preparation of an ensemble for performance;
- Skills in working with ensembles, particularly in regard to discipline, attendance, organization of rehearsal schedules, concerts, personnel and equipment.

Students wishing to perform in a University of Melbourne large ensemble (e.g., Symphony Orchestra), must complete the required audition and will need to list the ensemble, role they will be playing (e.g., "tutti viola"), and performance dates on the Ensemble Registration form. For students not performing in a University of Melbourne large ensemble, a study plan including repertoire, rehearsal schedule, complete personnel, and date/venue of performance(s) must be supplied as part of the Ensemble Registration, due on the first Monday of week 3 of the semester in which they are planning their ensemble enrolment. Additional details
Students who are enrolled in Ensemble subjects as part of their Master of Music by Research (Music Performance) are expected to participate in an ensemble which rehearses and performs at a Masters level. Ensembles must be approved by the Master of Music (Music Performance) Course Coordinator.
