This subject has the following components: Comprehensive oral health examination and treatment planning for adults, management of the older adult, periodontology, prosthodontics and cariology. It will be conducted as didactic component and using virtual clinical case based teaching.

This subject continues alongside subjects Oral Health Sciences 4 and Oral Health Practice 4. Teaching and learning activities will be centered at the Melbourne Dental School with support via the computer aided learning management system.

Intended learning outcomes

Students who complete this subject should be able to:



  • Competently show knowledge in the assessment of a patient’s medical history as to ascertain possible complications to care and to seek appropriate referral advice when required
  • Communicate which occlusal conditions contraindicate dental restoration by a DT/OHT
  • Identify different types of dental prostheses used in dentistry including the indications for each
  • Describe the possible complications for placing restorations adjacent to a fixed or removable prostheses
  • Appreciate the restorative-periodontal interface
  • Describe age related changes in teeth and the supporting structures
  • Appreciate the challenges of restoring form and function with multisurface restorations in adult mouths
  • Display knowledge in treatment planning for care considered part of the scope of practice for OHT or DT and consults or refers to a dentist for those elements outside such scope.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in adult clinical dental therapy practice
  • Recognize when clinical cases are beyond their skill set and make appropriate referral

Prerequisites

Admission into the GC-DTACP Graduate Certificate in Dental Therapy (Advanced Clinical Practice)

This subject is not available for students admitted in any other courses.

Recommended background knowledge

It is proposed to offer this subject to registered, currently practising dental therapists and oral health therapists in Australia and New Zealand. Previous management of clients aged 18-24 years would be of benefit but not essential.

Additional details

  • 1 x 1 hour on-line clinical case-based assessment, due end semester, (20%)
  • 10 x 20 minute online quizzes (5 x 20 min quizzes for cariology and 5 x 20 min quizzes for periodontics), each quiz is 20 minutes duration; spread through Weeks 3-18 (40%)
  • 1 x 1 hour objective structured clinical exam on prosthodontics and management of the older adult, due end semester, (40%)
