This subject introduces some of the key principles and approaches of working with young people in relation to mental health. The subject will also introduce the key theories and research that underlie contemporary understandings of young people and mental health.
Content includes:-
- The need for service reform in the mental health sector
- Understanding youth and mental health
- The clinical staging model of mental ill-health
- Aetiological models of youth mental ill-health
- Impact of mental ill-health on young people
- Early intervention in youth mental health
- Barriers and enablers in youth mental health
- Youth-friendly service delivery
Intended learning outcomes
By the end of this subject students should be able to:
- Outline the rationale for adapting mental health services to the needs of young people aged 12 to 25
- Explain important concepts and models surrounding the relationship between youth and mental health
- Identify common factors contributing to mental ill-health in young people
- Describe the impact of mental ill-health on young people
- Describe barriers and enablers that influence young people’s access to mental health services
- Describe the key approaches that underlie youth-friendly service provision

Online quizzes on lecture content - 4 multiple choice questions per week for 5 weeks and 5 multiple choice questions in the last week = 25 questions in all (1% per question)

Graded contributions to the graded discussion board, constituting one original post per week and at least two reply posts to another student over the course of the subject, totaling a minimum of 8 posts in all. All 8 posts receive an overall grade according to marking criteria
