This subject will provide practical insights into the role of science and scientific thinking within business, and the successful application of this perspective, along with communication and business tools, to work environments. Students will be assigned to syndicate groups to address a practical industry challenge/issue which has been identified by industry. In addressing this task students will draw upon their discipline knowledge and the skills provided in the professional tools subjects. Students will be taught on campus, with industry partners having regular contact with students in order to facilitate the undertaking of their project, across the duration of the subject.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- demonstrate their breadth of scientific and business knowledge to business leaders;
- review, interpret and analyse industry reports and datasets in a specialist biotechnology business;
- use problem-solving methods to examine and deliver a business project brief;
- produce a presentation and written summary to communicate the deliverables of a project brief to business leaders;
- communicate fluently and present arguments in oral and written form; and
- collaborate effectively in small and large groups.
Generic skills
At the completion of this subject, students should gain skills in:
- applying their scientific knowledge and skills to an industry-based challenge;
- distinguishing and resolving critical problems in business environments;
- developing time management and self-management techniques;
- working effectively in syndicate groups; and
- identifying how to communicate their solutions and ideas in a logical manner to relate to their peers, academics and industry.

Prerequisites
Admission into the MC-SCIBIT Master of Biotechnology
Students outside of the MC-SCIBIT may be allowed to enrol however will require permission from the subject coordinator.
