Overview
The Master of Arts by Research (Thesis Only) is a graduate research degree desgined for students to develop advanced skills in carrying out independent and sustained research in an area of specialisation in the Humanities and Social Sciences. The program is conducted in a research environment normally for a period of 18 months to two years of full-time study or part-time equivalent. The degree requires completion of a research thesis of 30,000-40,000 word written in English, unless approval has been given for the thesis to be written in a language other than English. Admission is based on at least a four-year honours degree from an Australian university, or a qualification or combination of qualifications deemed to be equivalent. The honours year of other qualification(s) on which admission is based will normally include a research project/component that accounts for at least 25% of one year’s work at fourth year or at Masters level.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who complete the Master of Arts (Thesis only) in this area of specialisation should:
- demonstrate a critical application of specialist knowledge;
- make an independent contribution to existing scholarship in the area of specialisation.
- demonstrate advanced research skills including the use of archival or primary evidence, analysis of data and judgment of conflicting evidence, specialist knowledge in the area of their research, presentation of the results of their research of publishable quality; and
- have an understanding of and commitment to research ethics or codes of practice.
