Agribusiness organisations operate in a complex global economy where they are expected to meet the fundamental requirements of food security and protecting the environment whilst facing significant challenges related to climate change, sustainability of resource use, rapid change and disruptive events. Successfully navigating these multifaceted and changing business environments requires both leadership skills and a deep understanding of strategy development and implementation. This subject focuses on the importance of leadership and strategy to successful business operation and the development of strategies designed to provide organisations with a sustainable competitive advantage.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should able to:
- Identify and analyse the current challenges facing agribusiness organisations
- Identify and interpret the trends, issues and constraints affecting leadership practice in agri-organisations
- Differentiate between management, leadership and strategic leadership and demonstrate an understanding of the importance of the leaders role in implementing successful business strategy
- Critically evaluate Leadership and change management theories and principles, particularly as they apply to transformational leadership, change management, innovation and strategy development
- Apply the concepts and theories of strategy and leadership to analyse and evaluate agribusiness industry case studies
- Formulate a strategic plan for an agribusiness organisation to address current challenges identified relevant to that industry.

It is expected students will develop:
- Awareness of, and ability to utilise appropriate communication technology and methods for the storage, management and analysis of data
- Capacity for creativity and innovation, through the application of skills and knowledge
- Ability to integrate information across related management disciplines to solve problems in applied situation
- Highly developed written communication skills to allow informed dialogue with individuals and groups from industry, government and the community
- Highly developed oral communication skills to allow informed dialogue and liaison with individuals and groups from industry, government and the community
- Ability to participate effectively as a member of a team in a face-to-face learning environment
- Ability to collaborate, exchange ideas and debate across on-line learning platforms
- Ability to plan work, use time effectively and manage small projects
