In this subject, the student will develop skills in promotion of therapeutic relationships using dance and movement. They will practice a range of clinical skills and methods to meet clients’ needs and promote self-expression through dance and movement. This will include fundamental techniques of kinaesthetic empathy, through attunement, mirroring and witnessing.
Furthermore, students will practice adapting different dance forms and styles in order to engage members in a therapeutic context. Students will learn to manage the flow of a dance movement therapy session including a clear beginning, middle and end and smooth and timely transitions, and effectively manage group dynamics.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- draw from a range of clinical DMT skills and methods to meet individual needs;
- apply techniques such as witnessing, mirroring, kinetic empathy and attunement to advance the therapeutic relationship;
- identify core facilitation skills necessary to work with individuals and groups.

Written reflection of video task, exploring own experience in offering and receiving kinaesthetic empathy.

Delivery of one DMT activity (max. 10 mins) demonstrating capacity to therapeutically adapt a chosen dance style to engage members of a DMT group (equivalent 1000 words). Provide 1000 word documentation of justification of choice and delivery of activities.
