This is a geotechnical engineering subject in which students will be introduced to various geotechnical engineering applications topics, including the design of foundations, basic rock mechanics, site investigation, rock slope assessment, tunnelling and earth dam designs and numerical Modelling in Geotechnics. This practically-oriented subject builds on the fundamental material learned earlier in ENEN20002 Earth Processes for Engineering and CVEN30010 Geotechnical Modelling and Design and is fully integrated with the knowledge gained from the two core subjects CVEN90044 Geotechnical Site Characterisation and CVEN90050 Geotechnical Engineering. This subject is of particular interest to students intending to establish a career in geotechnical engineering; it is also relevant to a range of engineering disciplines in which a good knowledge of geotechnical engineering offers an advantage.
The subject covers shallow foundations - types, function, bearing capacity and settlement; pile foundations types, bearing capacity, settlement in a single pile and a pile group, rock socketed piles, lateral response of piles, Micro piles, and Jet grouting; rock failure principles, rock testing, Rock slope assessment – Apply the theories of rock slope engineering on field projects; Site investigation – Planning and implementation of a site investigation, Tunnelling- Site investigation and initiation of a tunnelling project, Earth dams – key aspects of earth dams analysis and design.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject the student is expected to:
- ILO 1 - Analyse for both the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of different types of shallow foundations subjected to a variety of loadings
- ILO2 - Design procedures for pile foundations, bearing capacity and settlement in a single pile and pile group, rock socketed piles, lateral response of piles, micro piles, and Jet grouting
- ILO3 - Apply the theories of rock mechanics and rock slope engineering to solve field problems
- ILO4 - Plan and implement a site investigation
- ILO5 - Discuss key aspects of earth dams design, analysis, and practical issues
- ILO6 - Discuss fundamentals on tunnelling and key aspects in a tunnelling project
Generic skills
- Ability to undertake problem identification, formulation, and solution
- Ability to utilise a systems approach to complex problems and to design and operational performance
- Ability to manage information and documentation
- Understanding environmental responsibilities and the need for sustainable development
- Critical thinking and judgement
- Ability to communicate effectively
- Ability to function effectively as an individual with the capacity to be an effective team member.
