This subject introduces advanced learners of Japanese to two interrelated, but different, areas of language study: translation and interpreting. It provides the students with opportunities to understand and gain knowledge necessary for interpreting and translating. It involves the practice of interpreting and text translation in various settings and contexts. Students are also encouraged to explore the differences and similarities in various aspects of Japanese and English.

Intended learning outcomes

On successful completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the diverse functions of interpreting and translating between Japanese and English;
  • Critically reflect on their own translation and interpretation practice between Japanese and English;
  • Demonstrate advanced linguistic and metalinguistic awareness of both English and Japanese;
  • Have improved the accuracy of their analytical understanding of Japanese and be able to communicate that to others;
  • Critically reflect on and evaluate intercultural understanding in relation to translation and interpreting;
  • Demonstrate effective use of a variety of digital and print-based tools and texts necessary to the practice of translation and interpreting.
