In this subject, students will critically evaluate the principles of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS), including an assessment of the role of perioperative ultrasound, the team-based approach to the entire patient journey and the components of care at each stage. Students will critically evaluate the concept of ERAS, its intraoperative and postoperative considerations for multiple different types of surgeries and the role of clinical ultrasound within its framework.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Evaluate the concept of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS)
- Critique the intraoperative and post-operative considerations for ERAS and the role of perioperative ultrasound
- Critique ERAS considerations for multiple different types of surgery and the role of perioperative ultrasound
- Assess the quality audit cycle for ERAS programs

Formative group activity. Groups of 4 students will discuss cases that they have been involved with and create a structured group report on the problem, evaluation and solutions. Four cases per group, with all students receiving the same mark for the group report

Self-reflective e-portfolio of cases that the student has managed or been involved in patient care in perioperative medicine – 6 cases; .5hr total assessment time: equivalent to 500 words.

Time commitment details
170 hours ‐ it is estimated that distance education students will be required to spend approximately 170 hours total time commitment (a total of approximately 14 hrs/week, of which 2.5 hrs are contact hours as described above). The additional time commitment to the contact hours described above is anticipated to be spent reading nominated texts, journal review, practice worksheets and in identifying and integrating the information within their clinical practice.
