This capstone subject will provide students with an opportunity to consolidate their learning for further intellectual and professional growth through an advanced industry placement in a healthcare setting. As part of this subject, students will undertake a supervised internship placement which will be organised by the student, the host organisation, and the Subject Coordinator. Students will apply their academic knowledge to real-world challenges associated with clinical research and gain professional skills by undertaking an industry placed project. Engagement in this subject will enable students to bridge the gap between the classroom and clinical research setting. Moreover, it will enable students to develop contacts with experts working in their preferred research settings and will facilitate them to achieve a range of transferable skills including developing an employment/work portfolio.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Synthesise knowledge and skills acquired through the course (i.e., designing, setting-up and implementation, governance etc. of a clinical research project) and apply theory to real-world clinical research challenges in an industry setting;
- Propose practical solutions to clinical research issues identified within the bounds of the project the student is working on;
- Apply and integrate relevant skills to solve practical issues whilst working with unstructured/semi-structured research projects to inform industry practices;
- Exercising critical judgement, independent thinking, and presenting solutions and ideas in a logical manner to peers, academics and professionals in a clinical research settings;
- Critically reflect on industry processes and apply a problem solving approach;
- Demonstrate and critically reflect upon key professional attributes sought by employers (such as communication and interpersonal skills, project management skills, teamwork and initiative, time management and self-management skills);
- Demonstrate appropriate communication in industry and projects to a range of stakeholders in a professional health research context.
