Emergency nursing practice is characterised by a diversity of clinical presentations which range from those requiring minimal care to those with complex or life-threatening clinical presentations or injury. This variation in clinical presentation requires emergency nurses to have a strong foundation in patient assessment and pathophysiology knowledge. In this subject, students will clinically apply the theoretical principles from this subject and subjects, Applied Pathophysiology, Foundations of Critical Care Nursing and Emergency Nursing. Students will demonstrate the ability to undertake and support comprehensive patient assessment, monitoring and evaluation and care planning in specialty nursing practice. Students will learn to incorporate and apply scientific knowledge and evidence-based treatment and nursing interventions to support a patient-centred approach to inform their clinical decision making in practice.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject students will be able to:
- Demonstrate independent skills in performing timely comprehensive assessment of the undiagnosed patient;
- Apply knowledge and skills to recognise, prioritise and respond to patients with undifferentiated health conditions within a dynamic environment;
- Plan, implement and evaluate emergency nursing interventions in the delivery of safe and competent nursing care;
- Apply problem-solving, critical thinking, communication and reflective practice skills to the delivery of specialist emergency nursing care; and
- Coordinate the safe and timely care of patients with a variety of clinical needs
Generic skills
- A capacity to articulate their knowledge and understanding in oral and written modes of communication
- A capacity to manage competing demands on time, including self-directed project work
- Advanced competencies in areas of professional expertise and/or scholarship
- Advanced skills and techniques applicable to the discipline
- Well-developed problem-solving abilities in the discipline area, characterised by flexibility of approach
- An ability to evaluate and synthesise the research and professional literature in the discipline
- An appreciation of the ways in which advanced knowledge equips the student to offer leadership in the specialist area

Practical Assessment / Project- Clinical Skills Assessments Students complete 6 clinical hurdles (6*30 minutes assessments, each 10%, 3000 word equivalence) during the study period. Students must achieve overall competency to pass the hurdle.
