Today's healthcare system is multifaceted, complicated and often resistant to change. This subject will examine strategies for leading change in clinical settings and healthcare organisations. Participants will learn how to build and lead change initiatives, as well as to access resources, negotiate with others and effectively deal with obstacles as they implement their innovative programs.
Topics covered will include:
- Developing and implementing change initiatives
- Leveraging funding within the healthcare system
- Negotiating to get what is needed from others
- Anticipating and overcoming obstacles to change
Teaching/learning formats include:
- Interactive facilitator presentations
- Asynchronous learning via Canvas (videos, text, reflection and discussions)
- Case studies
- Group exercises
- Small team discussions of participant leadership challenges
- Participant presentations
- Guest speakers: senior clinical leaders who will share their leadership challenges and solutions
The informal exchange of insights and experiences among participants is a key aspect of learning.
Intended learning outcomes
Students should be able to:
- Navigate and influence their healthcare system in order to fund initiatives
- Initiate and implement constructive change within their healthcare organisations
- Lead improvements in patient quality and safety through effective innovation
- Collaborate with practitioners from other health disciplines to achieve best outcomes for their patients and organisations
- Argue the importance of exchanging feedback, support and assistance with colleagues
Generic skills
- Ability to bring new problem solving and analytic skills to issues
- Lead teams and work well as a member of a team
- Break down unfamiliar and difficult challenges, make plans for, and lead the implementation of, programs that address these challenges
- Communicate leadership visions and plans effectively through both spoken presentations and written documents.

- SC-CLNLEAD Specialist Certificate in Clinical Leadership
- N34AA Graduate Diploma in Clinical Research
- N01AA Master of Clinical Research
- GD-DTM Graduate Diploma in Disaster and Terror Medicine

Written participation in canvas-based discussion. Participants should engage in the Discussion Boards through their own posts and as responses to others. It would be expected that these posts, and the time spent on reflection, would be equivalent to the time spent on a 1500-word paper.

Time commitment details
In addition to the synchronous and asynchronous contact hours, students are expected to engage in online discussions throughout the teaching period, reflect upon learning materials at their workplace and then join class discussions and activities. Written participation in canvas-based discussions is required. Time for implementing learned material in the work setting and preparation of assessments is also required.
