This agency-based, supervised field education subject provides a focused practice learning experience. It provides students with opportunities for both professional learning and development and workplace preparation. Students will learn to integrate theory and practice. They will develop practice skills, increase their knowledge of the interface between policy, research and evidence-based practice and increase their understanding of the organisational contexts and fields of practice. This subject is the first part of the 500-hour placement (taken with SCWK90049) and requires students to complete 250 hours of the first supervised field placement required within the Master of Social Work course.
Supervised field placements are offered across many fields of research and clinical practice.
Intended learning outcomes
Knowledge
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Identify and compare various methods of social work practice, including case work, counselling, group-work, community development, policy and research;
- Describe and match contemporary social work theories and research, and legal, policy and other contextual parameters to practice approaches; and
- Recall professional values and ethics and identify situations where practice decisions are informed by these concepts.
Skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Critically engage in practice discussions that require professional decision making; and
- Critically reflect on practice skills and frameworks that are particular to the field of practice.
Application
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Display effective application of engagement and foundational oral and written communication skills with stakeholders;
- Apply knowledge of social work theories, methods and skills in effective communication to begin to meet the needs of the placement setting;
- Apply knowledge of the organisation's recording systems, and skills in documenting, to complete written work in a timely and appropriate style to suit the contextual setting; and
- Actively participate in guided self-reflection and self-care strategies.

Corequisites
Students must undertake placement offerings in sequential offerings to fulfill accreditation requirements.
The placement subject should be completed in the following order: SCWK90048 (May) and SCWK90049 (June).
Students unable to enrol in the above pairing or who need to take placement part time, will require approval from the subject coordinator, and should contact sw-placements@unimelb.edu.au
Note:
Before being allowed to commence a student placement, all students must satisfy certain pre-placement requirements found at: https://mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/study/current-students/placements. This should be completed at least 4 weeks before the placement period.

Additional delivery details
Students must undertake placement offerings in sequential offerings to fulfill accreditation requirements.
The primary placement block where most students undertake their placements is between May and August. Accordingly, placement subjects should be enrolled and completed in the following order: SCWK90048 (May) and SCWK90049 (July).
Students unable to enrol in the above subject pairing or who need to take a part time placement will require approval from the Subject Coordinator to enrol in any other study period.
