This agency-based supervised field education subject provides a focused practice learning experience. It provides students with opportunities for both professional learning and development and workplace preparation. Students will learn to integrate advanced theory and practice. They will further develop and consolidate practice skills, increase their knowledge of the interface between policy, research and evidence-based practice and increase their understanding of the organisational contexts and fields of practice. This subject is the second part of the 500 hour placement (taken with SKW90050) and requires students to complete 250 hours of the second supervised field placement required within the Master of Social Work course.
Supervised field placements are offered across many fields of research and clinical practice.
Intended learning outcomes
Knowledge
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Extend knowledge from SCWK90050 and explain the integration of theory, research and social work values and ethics to inform practice approaches.
Skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Analyse and respond to difficult situations with clients, colleagues and stakeholders.
Application
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Synthesize theory, research, and contextual requirements (such as legislation and agency mission) to assess and plan interventions, or conduct research and make recommendations, and evaluation of that practice;
- Integrate self-regulation, self-awareness, and reflexivity into professional practice;
- Manage a workload with personal autonomy and accountability to the level of a new graduate; and
- Translate practice experience and knowledge of social work practice and frameworks into a consolidated personal social work professional identity through utilisation of the Professional Identity Framework.

Additional delivery details
Students must undertake placement offerings in sequential offerings to fulfill accreditation requirements.
The primary placement block where most students undertake their placements is between May and August. Accordingly, placement subjects should be enrolled and completed in the following order: SCWK90050 (May) and SCWK90051 (July).
Students unable to enrol in the above subject pairing or who need to take placement part time will require approval from the Subject Coordinator and should contact sw-placements@unimelb.edu.au
Note: Before being allowed to commence a student placement, all students must satisfy certain pre-placement requirements found at: https://mdhs.unimelb.edu.au/study/current-students/placements. This should be completed at least 4 weeks before the placement period.
