Geology
Overview
The Graduate Diploma with a specialisation in Geology allows students who have completed an undergraduate degree to re-focus on, and, expand their geology related body of knowledge by completing the requirements of the Geology major of the Bachelor of Science. This specialisation provides a pathway to the Master of Science (Earth Sciences) and the Master of Geoscience.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who complete the Graduate Diploma with a specialisation in Geology should be able to:
- Apply knowledge from a range of core disciplines in geology including structural geology, tectonics, igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary petrology, field geology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, mineralogy and geobiology.
- Utilise skills in petrology, geological mapping, geological modelling, and undertake critical evaluation of scientific literature, which are crucial to being prepared to make contributions in research, education or in the minerals or environmental industries
- Explain the role of the cultures of science practiced in the investigation of geology and specifically, the role of observations, analysis, experimental design, models of various types, theory, and mathematics, whilst also identifying the role of history in this science.
- Apply knowledge and skills to understanding of Earth history and climate change, at time scales ranging from decadal to billions of years, as well as expertise relevant to finite natural resources like oil, gas, minerals and groundwater; and
