Overview
The Graduate Diploma in Arts (Advanced) allows you to undertake a minor research subject and coursework subjects in a specialist field of study at an advanced level. This course is equivalent to an Arts Honours program if the thesis component is taken. It serves as prerequisite entry to a Masters by Research or PhD for those who have not completed a four-year Arts (Honours) degree in the relevant area.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who complete the Graduate Diploma in Arts (Advanced) in this area of specialisation should:
- Be able to understand and critically engage with key theoretical and empirical approaches in sociology exploring the social patterns characterising contemporary societies
- Be able to understand and use advanced sociological research methods, whether in the form of critical engagement with secondary materials; document research; field work; or other forms of sociological research; and
- Have developed a reflexive awareness of the social, ethical and cultural dimensions of sociological research, analysis and practice.

100 credit points
Duration: 1 year full-time / 2 years part-time
The Graduate Diploma in Arts (Advanced) in this area of specialisation requires:
- four compulsory subjects (75 points)
- core subject (12.5 points)
- elective subject (12.5 points)
Total 100 points
Please note: Students must enrol in the thesis SOCI40006 Sociology Thesis Part 1 and SOCI40007 Sociology Thesis Part 2 over two consecutive semesters
