Intended learning outcomes
At the end of the Master of Speech Pathology degree student will be able to:
- Meet the core knowledge, skill and professional competencies identified by Speech Pathology Australia as necessary for practice as a speech pathologist;
- Understand and apply foundational sciences and theories and frameworks that underpin and inform speech pathology practice;
- Identify and differentiate typical human communication and swallowing and disorders that impact across the lifespan and the mechanisms for these disorders;
- Choose and implement appropriate best practice methods that enable them to fully assess, diagnose and manage the communication and swallowing needs of clients across varied contexts;
- Understand issues that may impact prioritisation and management of clients in various contexts;
- Establish and maintain professional relationships with their clients, professional colleagues and the general community through effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal;
- Have a strongly developed sense of self as a professional and ethical responsibility for clients, colleagues and the community generally;
- Demonstrate the ability to undertake the responsibilities of professional practice management, including maintaining resources and documentation;
- Understand key research and statistical approaches, and plan and conduct a research project with relevance to speech pathology;
- Demonstrate the implementation of evidence-based practice, including the ability to integrate critical evaluation of literature, client perspectives and circumstances and clinical knowledge and reasoning;
- Demonstrate a knowledge and capacity for providing culturally secure and responsive services, showing consideration for people's cultural and linguistic backgrounds including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of knowing, being and doing.
Graduate attributes
Graduates of the Master of Speech Pathology are qualified to begin work as a speech pathologist.
