The Specialist Certificate in Paediatric Nursing is a 25-credit point, part-time, coursework program conducted over two terms. It consists of two core 12.5 credit point online subjects.
The program is targeted towards nurses who are beginning in the specialty of paediatric nursing. The course is based on the latest evidence and best practice guidelines leading to high quality care for sick paediatric patients and their families.
The Specialist Certificate in Paediatric Nursing can also lead into the Graduate Certificate in Paediatric Nursing which requires completion of the additional 2 speciality subjects
Entry requirements
1. In order to be considered for entry, applicants must have:
- Completed a Bachelor or Nursing (or equivalent qualification, i.e. Master of Nursing Science entry to practice); and
- Documented evidence of at least one year of clinical experience as a registered nurse working in an acute or sub-acute healthcare service within the preceding 5 years from the time of application; and
- Current unrestricted registration as a Division 1 Registered Nurse with AHPRA or equivalent registration with an international health practitioner regulation agency.
Meeting these requirements does not guarantee entry.
2. In ranking applications, the Selection Committee will consider:
• prior academic performance; and
• relevance of speciality practice and clinical experience.
3. The Selection Committee may seek further information to clarify any aspect of an application in accordance with the Academic Board rules on the use of selection instruments.
4. Applicants are required to satisfy the university's English language requirements for graduate courses. For those applicants seeking to meet these requirements by one of the standard tests approved by the Academic Board, performance band 6.5 is required.

Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this course, graduates should be able to:
- Assess and evaluate the paediatric patient from birth to adolescence using scientific knowledge and evidence-based practice.
- Apply knowledge of human anatomy and pathophysiology across the continuum of care to understand common presentations and interventions in ill and paediatric patients.
- Identify the appropriate treatment and management strategies for a range of paediatric patients with common presentations, including interpretation and communication of patient assessment findings.
- Apply critical thinking to common clinical situations in the planning and provision of paediatric nursing care.
- Evaluate and communicate contemporary research underpinning foundational paediatric nursing practice.
- Apply problem solving skills appropriate for delivery and evaluation of paediatric care as a beginning level specialist nurse.

Course structure
The Specialist Certificate in Paediatric Nursing requires the successful completion of 25 credit points.
