This subject investigates the purpose and structure of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) curriculum framework. Key issues explored will include challenges for learning and teaching in relation to: individual, community, social, global consciousness; language and inclusion; disciplinarity, interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity; concept-based and contextual learning and assessment. There will be a strong theoretical and critical evaluation of the development and implementation of curriculum that is intended to support both the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills, and the development of the whole person.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject students should be able to

  • Critically examine ways in which the MYP curriculum framework supports the development of essential knowledge and skills, the development of the whole person, and strategies for different types of learning and teaching.
  • Articulate educational theory, research and practice that underpins core elements of the MYP framework.
  • Demonstrate the ability to design and critique curriculum that incorporates MYP standards and practices.

Generic skills

On completion of this subject students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of essential knowledge and skills for using the MYP curriculum framework;
  • Understand the significance of developing their practice on the basis of research evidence;
  • Evaluate and reflect upon their teaching and on the work of the institutions/communities in which they teach.
