The aims of this subject are to give an in-depth understanding of the French and francophone theatre literature and to value and critically evaluate this literature. The subject will cover textual analysis of French theatre plays from the 17th century to 21st century, such as Molière’s comedies, Racine’s tragedies (17th c.), Ionesco’s absurdist dramas (20th c.) or Yasmina Reza’s or Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt’s contemporary dramas (21st c.). Students will have the opportunity to read or perform passages from selected plays. They will also be involved in the creative writing of theatre scenes, role-plays or a short play in French.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced oral and written communication skills in French and become effective French communicators
- Gain multiple disciplinary perspectives through the study of texts and documents from French theatre
- Develop a deep understanding of the historical and inter-textual references in the various French plays and texts and be able to utilise different approaches such as performance and emotions to explore the cultural aspects of literature
- Achieve cultural awareness and be able to interact confidently with people from different cultures
- Demonstrate leadership, self-direction, organisation, and confidence in individual and team-based work.

At the completion of this subject, students should:
- Have developed skills in independent learning
- Have developed skills in critical thinking and in the interpretation of texts
- Have an understanding of the social and cultural sensitivity of language use in particular contexts
- Be able to to be part of a team
