In this subject, students will critically evaluate the role of clinical ultrasound in its application to the preoperative patient. They will interpret cardiovascular and other investigations used to risk stratify patients prior to surgery, and assess how these impact on perioperative planning. They will evaluate how best to optimise the patient condition prior to surgery, including appraisal of preoperative management of cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, renal and hepatic, neurological and psychiatric conditions and the role of clinical ultrasound in these settings.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Appraise the concept of prehabilitation, patient optimisation and risk stratification and the role of perioperative clinical ultrasound in these settings
- Understand how to perform and be able to interpret cardiopulmonary exercise tests
- Integrate knowledge of clinical ultrasound as part of the pre-surgery assessment
- Integrate risk assessment and preoperative optimisation for multiple organ system pathology, with evaluation of the role of perioperative ultrasound
- Integrate specific preoperative considerations for cancer surgery into preoperative planning
- Integrate specific preoperative considerations of high risk obstetric and paediatric patients into preoperative planning
Generic skills
- Academic distinction
- Integrity and self-awareness
- Improve problem-solving skills
- Improve analytical skills
- Improve ability to work as a team member
- Improve confidence about tackling unfamiliar problems
