This subject introduces students to major concepts in the field of popular music studies. Students examine major academic perspectives on popular music and genre, historiography, audience, gender, sexuality, race, technology and media through a range of case studies selected from around the world.
Intended learning outcomes
On successful completion of this subject, students should be able to:
identify major historical and contemporary debates in the academic literature on popular music;
find and assess secondary literature on popular music; and
craft and answer a research question related to the historiography of popular music.
