This subject extends on the skills provided in Introduction to Improvisation. Through practical activities in workshop-style classes, instrumentalists and singers explore musical improvisation in solo and group contexts through demonstrations, deep listening exercises and challenging performance tasks.
Tailored to suit their instrument or voice, students engage in activities that extend strategies for improvising across diverse musical styles, with a particular focus on jazz improvisation, harmonic, melodic and rhythmic tools inherent in standard jazz repertoire, and the protocols of solo and group performance in a jazz context.
This subject is designed for music students who have traditionally focused on performing notated music.
This subject is available for enrolment to students in all the Bachelor of Music Majors except Jazz and Improvisation.
