This subject introduces a variety of methods and philosophies for the analysis of Western tonal and atonal music, each with its own strengths and limitations.
Students undertake practical analysis assignments using different techniques, as well as a final project analysing a work of their own choice.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- analyse musical works in a variety of styles using appropriate techniques;
- present musical insights clearly, within the notational conventions and terminology of particular analytical methods;
- make informed choices about methods of analysis applicable in different contexts;
- articulate the strengths and weaknesses of analytical methods for particular tasks.
