Orchestral Performance Practicum 1 (MUSI90221)

This elective subject provides students a practical, work-integrated learning experience with a professional orchestra. By attending and observing rehearsals and through professional mentoring on orchestral techniques and excerpts, students gain rehearsal experience with and develop communication skills required by a professional orchestra.

This subject is only available to Master of Music (Orchestral Performance) students.

Placement

This subject provides students with a placement opportunity for participation with a partnered professional orchestra. Students are required to complete 22-hours of placement. Students are responsible for identifying a suitable placement with support from the subject coordinator. All placements must be approved by the subject coordinator, typically through an audition. 

Travel

This subject has a placement component that may require travel within Greater Melbourne, Victoria, or interstate.

Additional Costs

This subject may incur costs in addition to tuition fees. These costs include accommodation, food, and transport, to undertake chosen placement.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

• meet and critically evaluate standards for professional comportment in an orchestral rehearsal;
• demonstrate appropriate rehearsal etiquette in professional situations;
• demonstrate professional practice and communicate effectively with an industry mentor in rehearsal and one-to-one professional contexts.
