Sex and sexuality are core dimensions of social life. Sociologists have long investigated how sex captures and reflects social norms and practices. This subject will introduce students to core concepts in the theoretical, empirical and anatomical approaches to the sociology of sex. The subject will include but is not limited to, sexual identities, sexual practice and sex as a manifestation of power.
Intended learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to:
- Demonstrate a sociological understanding of contemporary sociological understandings of sex, sexualities and intimacy
- Have a good understanding of the different dimensions involved in sociology of sex
- Demonstrate an ability to apply sociological theories, concepts and evidence to the analyse sources of the sociology of sex
- Communicate sociological analyses of inequality using both oral and written formats.
Generic skills
Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to:
- Develop oral communication and written communication skills
- Demonstrate collaborative learning, problem solving, and team work
- Demonstrate application of theory to practice
- Demonstrate interpretation and analysis, and critical thinking
- Access data and other information from a range of sources.
