This subject introduces students to cutting edge research in four core areas of philosophy: (1) practical philosophy; (2) metaphysics and epistemology; (3) logic, philosophy of language and mind; (4) the history of philosophy. In most sessions, the seminar will be organized around work presented by a visiting philosopher, and will prepare students for participation in the philosophy discipline colloquium.

Intended learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to: 

  • Examine cutting edge research in four core areas of philosophy: (1) practical philosophy; (2) metaphysics and epistemology; (3) logic, philosophy of language and mind; (4) the history of philosophy
  • Measure the range of contemporary scholarship in their discipline or interdisciplinary area
  • Reflect on, critically evaluate and synthesise the contemporary research literatures relevant to their thesis topic
  • Formulate and present the research proposal for their confirmation
  • Articulate the range of problems, concepts and theories relevant to their thesis and field of study.

Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to:

  • Think critically

  • Develop and present arguments for or against a position
  • Consider multiple viewpoints and arguments for those viewpoints
  • Articulate ideas, concepts, and interpretations with clarity and coherence
  • Engage in critical reflection, synthesis, and evaluation of research-based and scholarly literature.
