Professional Development and Application (BUSA90554)

This subject is designed to help students develop the skills and knowledge required to effectively manage the early stages of their career, as well as assess their academic learning in a real-world setting.   This subject runs across the entire year of the full-time course and identifies specific needs of each individual student and then provides ongoing support, training, and opportunities to practice and perfect these skills.

The subject also integrates academic learning and practical challenges in implementing data analytics in an organisation via a 5-week group internship as a key learning and assessment aid for employability skills and attributes, providing improved knowledge of organisations, workplace culture and career pathways for students.   

 

Assessment of the subject includes the completion of the report and a project presentation. This is a team project. Students interested in a research higher degree may, with permission, undertake an individual research project.

 

The program focuses on four areas:

• Communication skills: These skills include effective presentations, verbal communication, written communication, public speaking, and communicating technical material to non-technical audiences.
• Career development skills: These skills include case practice, interview skills, CV writing, networking, and business etiquette.
• Team skills: These skills include managing conflict, cultural awareness, giving and receiving feedback, and resilience.
• Practicum skills: The completion of a 5-week project using real data in/from an industry setting under an approved supervisor.

 

The first three areas are the preparation for industry placement.
