The subject is designed to either refresh or introduce students to foundational concepts within probability and statistics, and their applications in a business setting. The subject covers both theoretical concepts and practical exercises to help students solidify their statistical knowledge and be prepared for further subjects within applied business analytics. Students learn the foundational concepts of probability and random variables, descriptive statistics and their use and interpretation to common business variables, and applications of sample statistics and inference. Simple and multiple regression is also introduced and illustrated via case study applications. As part of the subject, students will be introduced to R, a statistical computing environment.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Determine which statistical techniques to apply to different types of data.
- Analyse large datasets and convert raw data into relevant information for management. decisions, using parametric and semi-parametric methods.
- Apply logical thinking to problem-solving in context.
