This subject will explore the design of advanced materials from the micro to nano-domain and their application in areas such as biomedicine and diagnostics. Common materials characterisation techniques, such as fluorescence microscopy, electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, will also be studied.
Intended learning outcomes
Students completing this subject should be able to:
- Show an increased knowledge and understanding of chemical science, with emphasis on the properties and performance of materials
- Show an increased knowledge and understanding of experimental methods for the characterization of materials.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject, students will have:
- advanced problem-solving and critical thinking skills
- an ability to evaluate the professional literature
- an understanding of the changing knowledge base
- a capacity to apply concepts developed in one area to a different context
