This subject provides an introduction to research and evaluation in health professions education. The subject distinguishes between the purpose and approaches of research, evaluation, and the scholarship of teaching, as well as showing their connectedness. The research-focused component of the subject introduces principles and approaches to health professions education research and engages learners with key research domains through analysis and application of the literature and research principles. The evaluation component considers the purposes for undertaking evaluation in a health professions education context, provides a focus on evaluation of clinical teaching, and introduces methodological approaches utilised in the evaluation of teaching.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Discuss and distinguish the purposes of research and evaluation in a health professions education context.
- Compare different approaches to evaluation of clinical teaching and when they might be used.
- Design approaches to the evaluation of clinical teaching utilising appropriate methodologies.
- Identify strengths and areas for improvement as a clinical teacher.
- Describe different research paradigms and their aligned research approaches used in clinical education research.
- Analyse the design and methodology of published research on clinical education.
- Synthesise clinical education research and its application.
- Apply education research literature and research design principles to issues in clinical education.
- Assess the ethical implications of research and evaluation activities in health professions education.
