This subject progresses from Screenwriting Practices 2A with a focus on genre screenwriting for the screen media. Examining Science Fiction, Romance, Thriller, Fantasy, and Horror storytelling conventions, students develop a basic working knowledge of these popular forms as explored by screenwriters.

Students participate in Story Teams to complete in-class exercises in genre storytelling and write a 30-page screenplay anchored in the conventions of a genre chosen from those examined in the subject.

Delivery

This subject is co-delivered with FLTV20008 Genre Screenwriting.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • create, develop and write short scripts whose conventions are anchored in a particular genre;
  • identify and effectively apply screenwriting tropes employed in genre filmmaking;
  • critically discuss the historical and contemporary use of genre conventions in writing for the screen;
  • collaborate productively as a member of a creative team;
  • analyse a screenplay to give and receive creative and critical feedback in a professional manner.

Generic skills

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • communicate effectively in oral, written and digital forms;
  • develop and implement innovative and creative ideas;
  • give and receive constructive feedback;
  • work as part of a team to achieve a common goal;
  • apply critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills to unfamiliar challenges;
