This subject will expand the knowledge of transthoracic echocardiography by learning pathophysiology and assessment of ventricular function, including in diastolic function.
Topics include:
- The Cardiac Cycle
- Left Ventricular Systolic Function Pathophysiology
- Evaluation of Left Ventricular Function
- Right Ventricular Systolic Function
- Right Ventricular Function Evaluation
- Atrial Function and Pressure Estimation
- Diastolic Function Pathophysiology
- Assessment of Diastolic Function
- Management of Diastolic Function
- HEARTscan Studies
Intended learning outcomes
The completion of the subject, students should:
- Understand the cardiac cycle
- Evaluation of left ventricular function
- Evaluation of right ventricular systolic function
- Understand diastolic function pathophysiology and assessment
- Complete 40 case reviews
Generic skills
- Enhance time utilisation
- Improve written skills and problem solving skill
All students are expected to have access to a computer that can operate a Windows platform or simulation.

Prerequisites
Admission into one of the following:
- GC-CLINUS Graduate Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound
- GD-CLINUS Graduate Diploma in Clinical Ultrasound
- MC-CU Master of Clinical Ultrasound
This subject is not available for students admitted in any other courses.
