In the subject, students will critically evaluate the aetiology, diagnosis and management of the most common and important perioperative complications, as well as management of analgesia, fluids and nutrition. This subject will also critically evaluate the pivotal and integral role that focused clinical ultrasound has on clinical diagnosis and decision-making in the perioperative period.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Integrate clinical assessment with focussed clinical ultrasound and other investigations in the detection of post-operative complications
- Evaluate current best practice in the diagnosis and management of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, with a critical evaluation of the role of clinical ultrasound
- Evaluate current best practice in the diagnoses and management of respiratory complications after surgery, with a critical evaluation of the role of clinical ultrasound
- Evaluate current best practice in the diagnoses and management of cardiovascular complications after surgery, with a critical evaluation of the role of clinical ultrasound
- Evaluate current best practice in the diagnoses and management of endocrine and septic complications after surgery, with a critical evaluation of the role of clinical ultrasound
- Evaluate current best practice in the diagnoses and management of abdominal, renal, and hepatic complications after surgery, with a critical evaluation of the role of clinical ultrasound
- Evaluate current best practice in the diagnoses and management of neurological and psychiatric complications after surgery, with a critical evaluation of the role of clinical ultrasound
- Evaluate current best practice in the management of wounds and anastamotic breakdown, with a critical evaluation of the role of clinical ultrasound
- Evaluate current best practice in perioperative fluid management, pain management and nutrition, with a critical evaluation of the role of clinical ultrasound
- Evaluate current best practice in perioperative blood transfusion management, and treatment of coagulopathy, with a critical evaluation of the role of clinical ultrasound
- Integrate perioperative complications principles into clinical case
