After completion of this subject, students will have the knowledge of how to safely insert and clean a transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) probe, to acquire the standard TOE views, interpret haemodynamic state and limited valve assessment using two dimensional and colour flow Doppler, interpret common cardiac pathology and be able to write a focused ultrasound report. Students will have interpreted and written a report on 10 focused TOE studies of a wide range of commonly encountered cardiac pathology.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Identify the key steps required to safely insert and clean a transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) probe and acquire the standard transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) views.
- Interpret the normal and pathological haemodynamic states using focused TOE.
- Interpret limited cardiac valve assessment and pericardial effusion using two-dimensional and colour flow Doppler modes using focused TOE.
- Write a structured interpretive report of focused TOE.
- Evaluate the requirements for training, competence, and certification in focused TOE.
