After completion of this subject, students will have the knowledge and skill to perform and interpret focused clinical ultrasound of commonly encountered conditions of the arterial and venous systems and be able to write a structured report. Students will perform, interpret, write a report and submit a log-book of 15 ultrasound studies and ultrasound-guided cannulation of peripheral and/or central arteries and veins on patients and/or simulators and interpret and report an additional 10 on-line ultrasound studies.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Comprehensively understand the indications, uses and limitations of focused clinical ultrasound in assessment of the vascular assessment including arterial aneurysm, stenosis and deep venous thrombosis.
- Perform ultrasound to diagnose commonly occurring pathology of the carotid artery, abdominal aorta, the arteries of the upper and lower limb and the lower limb veins and write a structured ultrasound report on patients and/or simulators
- Perform ultrasound-guided cannulation of peripheral and/or central arteries and veins
- Evaluate the requirements for training, competence and certification of vascular diagnostic and procedural ultrasound
