The Student Conference is a one-week intensive subject that brings together students across all Doctor of Medicine (MD) years and sites for a student led and driven conference. The aim of the Student Conference is to allow students to learn from each other, experts in various fields and other health professionals in topic areas suited to a conference format. In fourth year, students will attend, actively participate in the conference program and provide peer review, as well as having the opportunity to teach, present and be actively involved in conference organisation. A particular feature of Student Conference 4 will be the presentation of papers and posters reporting projects undertaken in the MD Scholar pathways.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
As a Scientist and Scholar:
- Appraise how new learning from novel research presented at conferences might apply to future clinical practice.
As a Medical Practitioner:
- Select, demonstrate and explain the importance of extending clinical skills for a self-identified learning gap.
As a Health Advocate:
- Evaluate approaches that facilitate their ability to act as a health advocate based.
As a Professional and Leader:
- Evaluate approaches that enhance their ability to act as a professional and leader.
Generic skills
By the end of this subject students should have developed the following generic skills:
1. The ability to extract information from expert presentations and to take notes to enable them to write a report on those presentations
2. The ability to participate in groups discussions and workshops
3. An understanding of academic conferences and their role in the dissemination of knowledge
