The information in this section applies to both MGMT90235 Minor Thesis Part 1 and MGMT90236 Minor Thesis Part 2.

This subject involves a supervised minor thesis of 10,000 words, and must be completed over two consecutive semesters. The thesis will embody the results of the student’s own research and it is expected that the research topic will be specific to a study area or disciplinary field relevant to the EMA. 

Students should contact the Subject Co-ordinator in the semester prior to enrolment in this subject so that appropriate thesis supervision and subject expectations can be discussed.

Undertaking this thesis is a pathway to further academic study. 

Intended learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to: 

  • Demonstrate a specialist understanding of the topic being studied
  • Apply research and analysis skills pertinent to the topic
  • Appraise current debates and issues in the topic area
  • Complete critical independent research
  • Communicate research and research findings effectively and persuasively.

Generic skills

The information in this section applies to the entire enrolment across Parts 1 and 2 of the subject (i.e. MGMT90235 and MGMT90236 together). Students who successfully complete this subject should be able to: 

  • Conceptualise and plan a substantial project of original research
  • Present material in draft form and engage productively with a supervisor
  • Consolidate and enhance established skills in engaging creatively and critically in a specific field
  • Synthesise critical arguments and debates
  • Apply enhanced drafting and writing skills, in both a critical and creative manner
  • Improve time management skills and manage study resources over a sustained project.

Eligibility and requirements

Prerequisites

Students must have written approval from the subject coordinator in the semester prior to enrolment, based on a 750-word proposal that outlines the topic, research method, supervisor and at least 10 relevant sources, of which at least five must be academic.

Students must have a nominated supervisor who has agreed to supervise the student in this subject.

Students in the 200 point and 150 point programs must have a minimum WAM of 80% (H1) in 50 points of completed subjects within the program.

Late Penalty and Assessment hurdle requirement: Assessment submitted late without an approved extension will be penalised at five per cent (5%) of the possible marks available for the assessment task per day or part thereof. All pieces of assessment must be submitted to pass the subject.   • This subject continues over two consecutive study periods, with students first enrolling in MGMT90235 Minor Thesis Part 1 and then subsequently enrolling in MGMT90236 Minor Thesis Part 2, for a total enrolment of 25 credit points. Students will receive an overall result for the subject following completion of the two-subject sequence. Please note that students must also successfully complete ARTS90032 Research Principles and Practices to be eligible to submit their minor thesis.
