This subject examines both the strategic and operational levels of purchasing, procurement, logistics, transportation and supply management. This subject will identify the complete purchasing process model as well as inter-organisational and intra-organisational logistics, and enhance the ability to manage the critical components of the process model and manage and design various logistics distribution effectively and efficiently. Specific topics will include: make-or-buy decision; Kraljic’s sourcing strategies; supplier selection processes and criteria; strategic sourcing approaches; outsourcing/offshoring/re-shoring/near-shoring; global sourcing; contracting; ordering; post-purchase performance evaluation; supplier integration; supplier development; supply base optimisation; transportation management; transportation outsourcing; intermodal transportation; warehousing and distribution centre; inbound and outbound logistics management; vehicle sequencing and routing optimisation; intra-organisational process and layout design.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Analyse purchasing, logistics and transportation strategies and align them to organisational strategies
- Develop and apply models for analysing sourcing, logistics and transportation decisions
- Identify challenges and critical success factors of global sourcing and transportation
- Evaluate and apply models for analysing ordering and intra-organisational logistics decisions

- Analyse third-party logistics service provider performance
