This subject introduces students to the methodologies needed in applied musicology through the implementation and presentation both orally and in writing of a number of small-scale research projects (such as programme notes, talks, research assistance, material for the web) as directed and appropriate to their area of research.
The research project topics and timelines are agreed upon in collaboration between student and supervisor at the commencement of the semester.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- skills to be able to plan and construct a conference paper;
- ability and self-confidence to present a lucid oral presentation;
- ability to assess scholarly presentations;
- ability to carry out a prescribed research task;
- knowledge of what is required to submit work to a scholarly publication.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students will have developed:
- a capacity for independent critical thought;
- an openness to new ideas;
- knowledge, skills and practices that provide a basis for independent critical inquiry and research-based writing.
