This subject integrates academic learning and the development of employability skills through a program of seminars and supervised work placement with an external performing arts organisation or an internal placement within the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music.
Workplace cultures and expectations will be explored, with an emphasis on the importance of personal initiative.
Placement
Students are required to complete 60-hours (7.5 days) of work placement with an approved music business or organisation. Students will work across a range of tasks relevant to the host objectives in discussion with the host organisation and subject coordinator.
Students are responsible for identifying a suitable placement with support from the subject coordinator. All placements must be approved by the subject coordinator.
Placement dates are individually agreed between the student and their host. Students are required to negotiate placement hours around their other subject requirements.
Additional Costs
There are no additional costs for this subject. If the external host requires students to travel, the host pays students a travel allowance and per diem.
Travel
This subject may have local, regional, or domestic travel. Students are required to complete a medical and health questionnaire prior to any travel outside metropolitan Melbourne.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- articulate and communicate personal objectives and competencies related to establishing a career in music;
- establish career-related connections with individuals and organisations;
- work professionally to the requirements of the workplace;
- identify and appraise key internal and external factors relevant to an organisation that influence the accomplishment of its mission and principal goals;
- critically evaluate the work placement experience.
Generic skills
On completion of this subject students should be able to:
- apply time management and organisational skills;
- apply critical thinking skills and knowledge to unfamiliar environments and tasks;
- demonstrate analytical and problem-solving skills.

Additional details
Placement
Prior to undertaking the placement students are made aware of all placement details and expectations. The placement coordinator will monitor the student's progress during the placement which may involve site visits, discussions with the industry partner, verbal and/or written progress reports.
The placement industry partner will provide a written report on conclusion to both the student and the placement coordinator. All assessment is conducted by the subject coordinator.
