The subject explores a range of Spanish musical styles from the middle ages to the present day, and their interaction with European and American musical traditions. Topics include aspects of early music, opera and music theatre, concert music, film music, contemporary popular music, flamenco and the guitar in Spanish music.
The subject will engage with the music’s creation, dissemination, social contexts and modes of consumption, and will draw on recent scholarship relating to issues of identity, nationalism and exoticism in the musics studied.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject students should have:
- developed their research skills;
- developed their ability to write critically on a variety of musical styles and performance contexts associated with Spain;
- further appreciation of the social contexts of music and its dissemination.
