This subject provides students with practical placement experience in music therapy under the guidance of a qualified music therapist. The practical placement will include a graded introduction to the assessment of client needs, the development of program plans and the provision of music therapy interventions.

Placement

Students are required to complete 20 days (160-hours) of practical placement, which will have both observational and participatory experiences of working with clients and evaluating benefit from the intervention.

Tutorials will focus on professional issues, workplace preparedness and experiential peer group learning.

Accreditation information: This subject contributes 160 hours to the 640 hours required for accreditation by the Australian Music Therapy Association.

Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this subject, students should be able to:

  • apply developing music therapy verbal and musical facilitation skills with individuals and/or groups;
  • adapt learned music therapy skills to meet the needs of specific client populations;
  • compare contrasting literature using IT resources and print journals;
  • draw on developing music therapy knowledge and facilitation skills to work as an informed member within the multidisciplinary team;
  • work collaboratively and professionally in a group or team environment;
  • follow the Australian Music Therapy Association (AMTA) ethical code of practice.

Generic skills

On completion of this subject, students should have:

  • developed the ability to work in teams;
  • achieved a high level of ability in applying theory to practice;
  • developed skills in evaluating objective outcomes.
