Supervised field education provides a focused practice learning experience. Students will learn to integrate social work theory, knowledge, values, and practice, develop practice skills, increase their knowledge of the interface between policy, research and evidence-based practice and increase their understanding of the organisational contexts and fields of practice. The first placement is comprised of two subjects taken consecutively: SCWK90048 Supervised Field Placement 1A and SCWK90049 Supervised Field Placement 1B. This subject constitutes the second half (250 hours) of the first supervised field placement required within the Master of Social Work course.
Intended learning outcomes
Knowledge
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of evaluation methods for the field of practice and for placement.
Skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Engage and communicate effectively with different stakeholder groups.
- Analyse, plan, and explain for the use of various methods of social work practice, including case work, counselling, group-work, community development, policy and research, used by the placement provider.
Application of Knowledge and Skills
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Use of self-regulation, self-awareness, and self-reflection in practice to retain a professional presentation in emotionally challenging situations
- Show responsibility and planning for continuous learning and development
- Integrate knowledge, skills and values learned in coursework into practice in the placement context
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills in social work practice at a foundational level
- Actively participate in the evaluation of their competence as demonstrated during the placement
