This subject combines academic exploration of surfing's history, culture, and science with a unique practical immersion. Students will uncover the multifaceted nature of surfing in Australia, which will include examining surfing’s Polynesian roots in the First Nations cultures, its development by the modern surfing industry, as well as delving into the science that shapes the perfect wave.
Students will examine the distinct surfing culture which has emerged and is still evolving through Australian music, film and literature. Students will also examine the effects of large businesses such as Billabong and Rip Curl on Australia’s surfing culture.
This subject will investigate all aspects of the sport from Engineering and Science through to Public Health and Fine Arts. The subject includes two full day field trips for students to experience surfing for themselves. The field trips are tailored for people of all abilities, from non-swimmers to experienced surfers. This subject will also teach the basics of surf safety with practice sessions conducted by past and present surf life savers and professional surfers.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Describe the importance of surfing as a component of the cultural development of Australia
- Identify surf hazards and predict the best times to surf in real life situations
- Create and analyse a piece of surfing related art in its many forms
- Explain how natural and social systems shape surfing life
