Leadership in Adolescent Health is a capstone option in the Master of Adolescent Health and Wellbeing (Leadership Specialisation). This subject enables participants to draw on the expertise developed throughout the course and apply it ‘real-time’ to a workplace or organisational change project. The project is focussed on the student’s work context, in order to embed, and reflect upon, the practical experience of leadership. It will be developed and overseen by both a professional and academic mentor. The student will work in consultation with their professional and academic mentors to (1) consult stakeholders and develop a project brief, and (2) undertake focussed activity and analysis, and (3) prepare a professional report for the supporting organisation. The student will present their report at the Capstone Presentation Day.
Intended learning outcomes
On completion of this subject, students should be able to:
- Interpret theories, models and principles of leadership, exploring their own professional role in the process of advocacy and change-making in organisations that work with work with young people;
- Identify, research and analyse a pertinent practice-based challenge related to young people's health and wellbeing, applying and translating conceptual frames for promoting wellbeing and interventions, including health promotion and prevention approaches;
- Utilise inclusive, creative and critically reflective approaches to assess and formulate a salient and shared challenge in adolescent health and wellbeing policy, programming or practice.
- Plan and execute a substantial project, engaging and leading stakeholders in the co-development of strategies to address challenges and promote adolescent health and wellbeing.
- Reflect on learning from the project and the experience of leadership.
