Overview

The Honours program at the Department of General Practice and Primary Care will provide the student with the skills to conduct human research in the primary care setting. Primary health care research focuses on the provision of primary, comprehensive and continuing care.

The research focus of the Department is on quality and safety in primary health care, models of primary care and clinical research in primary care. The social model of health, the doctor patient relationship and the primary care team are all embedded firmly within this work. Honours students will have the opportunity to join one of the current research groups within the Department.

The course year starts in February and ends in November and is only available full time.

Admission requirements

In addition to satisfying the Bachelor of Science (Degree with Honours) entry requirements, students are required to have completed stream specific prerequisites. Intended learning outcomes

On completion of this Honours program, students should be able to:

  • Explain the role of fundamental and applied health research in addressing real-world primary care challenges
  • Apply critical and analytical skills to the identification and resolution of problems that arise in the conduct of primary care research
  • Demonstrate proficiency in accessing, searching and summarising published research in primary care
  • Demonstrate expertise in all aspects of research design, including selection of populations, sampling approaches, data collection methods and analysis
  • Demonstrate skills in conducting research, including selection of populations, sampling approach, data collection methods and analysis
  • Articulate scientific explanations of primary care concepts, theories and research findings, and communicate these ideas effectively to various audiences in both written and oral formats
  • Apply principles of intellectual integrity and the ethics of scholarship, including identifying and following the principles of ethical conduct of research with humans
  • Demonstrate proficiency in time management for completion of scientific tasks against set deadlines
  • Work effectively independently, and collaboratively under supervision within a research team from diverse backgrounds.
